Alpha Chi Omega Convention 2016 - #AXOSunshine

It might be chilly and fall-like, but we are remembering back to "fun in the sun" with our sisters in Orlando on this #FlashbackFriday.

We didn’t win any awards in 2016, but we still had fun! (Awards from Convention 2012, #AXOattheArch, and Convention 2010). The Beta Eta chapter won the Community Relations Award, and we were thrilled for them! Xi Omega Xi, the alumnae chapter we share with Beta Eta also won TWO awards (many thanks to their president and Beta Eta chapter advisor, Britain!):  Sisterhood Award and Long Distance Collegiate Support Award!

Plan to join us in Austin, TX for Convention 2018. Jenn said, "Will the hashtag be #KeepAXOWeird?" (love it!)

A photo montage from our treasurer JSBH to share “What’s Convention Like? …” Answer:  AMAZING!

We were so fortunate to enjoy the company of five current collegians at Convention!

The box arrived; the excitement built!

We won the following:

We will use the neat Alpha Chi-themed awards as prizes for our sisterhood events!

Rick Perkins finalists announced

CNHI

THOMASVILLE — Three faculty members at Southwest Georgia Technical College (now Southern Regional Technical College) have been selected as finalists for the Rick Perkins Award

These finalists include Heidi Bivins (Anatomy & Physiology), Glenda Hatcher (Medical Assisting), and Chris Parrish (Business Administrative Technology).

The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction honors technical education’s most outstanding instructors. Instructors are nominated by their peers and students, and those instructors with the most nominations were selected as finalists.

“Our Rick Perkins Award nominees represent excellence in instruction at Southwest Georgia Technical College. These three instructors have been nominated by their colleagues, one of the highest honors that a faculty member can receive from their peers. I wish our three instructors good luck in the upcoming competition for Instructor of the Year and know that they will do well as they exemplify teaching excellence, innovation, and leadership,” Dr. Craig Wentworth, SWGTC President.

This award has been an ongoing, statewide event since 1991 and is designed to recognize technical college instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields.

Formerly known as the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence, the Rick Perkins Award was renamed in memory and honor of Thomas “Rick” Perkins, an instructor at West Central Technical College, now West Georgia Technical College, who received the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence prior to his untimely death.

To become the state Rick Perkins Award winner, nominees go through three phases of selection: the local technical college level, the regional level, and the state level.

The state Rick Perkins Award winner serves as an ambassador for technical education in Georgia and must have made significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in his or her field of instruction.

The winner must also exemplify excellence and a commitment to the mission of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). The statewide winner, who will be announced at a ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia, will carry the title of the Technical College System of Georgia Instructor of the Year.

The SWGTC Rick Perkins finalists have already competed in interviews. This SWGTC winner will represent the college at the regional competition to be hosted at Moultrie Technical College (Tifton Campus) on Feb.  28.

All regional winners will compete for the TCSG Instructor of the Year title and will be announced on April 25 at the GOAL and Rick Perkins Award Ceremony.

Southwest Georgia Technical College is a unit of the Technical College System of Georgia.

Dining in the Dark offers demo of what life is like for blind
By Ashton Wilkins • Democrat Writer • Published: October 25. 2010 2:00AM

Toni King started out as a client at the Lighthouse of the Big Bend, a nonprofit dedicated to guiding people through vision loss. She is now an independent living specialist and former member of the organization's Board of Directors.

On Sunday, she helped those who could see to experience life for an hour as someone who is visually impaired at the sixth annual Paula Bailey Dining in the Dark event. The event is named for Bailey, a former client and board member who became blind and deaf in 1999 after an attack of meningitis. Bailey passed away in April 2005. The organization's Inspirational Community Member award also is named after her. Norine Lebitzke [Beta Eta], president of the board of directors for Lighthouse of the Big Bend and Paula Bailey nominee, won the award.

We WON - AGAIN!

Thanks to our caring and interested officers and local Tallahassee-Thomasville-Quincy-St George Island-Perry (etc.) alumnae, our chapter followed up our 2008 National Council Trophy win with awards in two categories at Alpha Chi Omega Convention earlier this month in Washington, D.C.! We won the Membership Outreach Award and the Fine Arts Award.

Jennifer (second from left) accepts the Membership Outreach Award from the 2008-2010 National Vice Presidents:

The Membership Outreach Award recognizes a chapter that goes "above and beyond" in reaching out to current and potential members. The committee was especially impressed with our Real. Strong. Women. Entrepreneurs listing (see sidebar at left). (If you have a business we can include, please let us know!)

Jennifer B (right) accepts the Fine Arts Award from Jen D. of Alpha Chi Omega's Panhellenic Delegation at the Olympian Luncheon Saturday, June 10th:

The Fine Arts Award goes to the chapter with the best "programs to advance the appreciation and practice of fine arts." We are so proud of this award, as we work hard to promote the fine arts all year round. See some examples of our support of the fine arts in these 2010 blog posts:

Congratulations Tracey!

It'll be two exciting Wednesdays in a row for Tracey C. (Epsilon Chi, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill)! On April 21st, she won the Family Success Award from the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship; on April 28th, the winner of the Rotary Club Ethics in Business Award will be named. Tracey is one of the seven nominees! We wish her the best of luck and send our congratulations on these well-deserved honors!

(Congratulations and best wishes also to Martha Stubbs. Her daughter-in-law Joy (Gamma Iota, University of Florida) is our connection to the Stubbs Educational Foundation. We are proud to support their work providing scholarships for local music students!)

Institute honors achievers in business
Sean Flood, an FSU alumnus and owner of the Gotcha Group, probably put it best in his praise of business support he has received from the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship.

"I can truly say that without the generosity of JMI, I would not be here," Flood told those gathered for the institute's annual celebration of business achievement.
It was an anniversary party Wednesday night for JMI in honor of its 15 years of business support, but the companies that have benefited from JMI programs are just as much of the story. The spotlight shines on them as much as it does on the institute, founded through a gift from legendary South Florida automobile retailer Jim Moran.
Thus far, more than 3,000 Florida businesses have received assistance. JMI also coordinates the school program Junior Achievement in Leon County and has had more than 9,000 students participate.
JMI also sponsors the entrepreneurial roundtables that get company owners together to discuss problems and opportunities. Sam Varn, owner of Awards4U in Tallahassee, is a long-time roundtable member and received the JMI Advocate Award for his efforts to make the institute's programs more visible.
The award for Outstanding Commitment went to Arthur and Pamela Aveling of King Arthur's Tools. They were honored for their JMI involvement, but also sharing what they learn with business owners.
Pam Butler, CEO of Aegis Business Technologies, received the award for Community Support and Involvement. The Financial Growth Award went to Steve Roden, CEO of LearnSomething Inc. Fred G. Shelfer Jr., president and CEO of Goodwill Industries Inc. Big Bend, received the Success Story Award for improving his organization's profitability.
Tracey Cohen, president of Target Copy, was presented with the Family Success Award in honor of her achievements in taking the reins of the business started by her mother, Mayda Williams.
Students were honored, too. Seniors Stephanie Farquhar and Sara Clack produced a marketing plan for the Uptown Cafe as part of their venture consulting class, and it has paid dividends for the business. They received the Student Excellence Award.
In a business plan development competition that had a $5,000 first prize, the winners were the team of Cameron Bullock, Sam Nebel and Trey Ware. They worked with the FSU Institute for Energy Systems, Economics and Sustainability, whose scientists have invented a technology for making energy grids work smarter, and needed a business plan for commercializing the technology.

Rotary award recognizes good ethics in business

The Rotary Clubs of Tallahassee, Wakulla and Monticello are hosting their 10th anniversary Ethics in Business Award at the civic center Wednesday. Seven local business men and women have been nominated for the award, given in memory of the late Bill Dugger, a former Rotary president.

"Every year I am pleased that our local businesses have this many people who do business ethically," said Mark Thomasson, Rotary Club of Tallahassee president. "Everyone nominated is a winner because this is a celebration of ethics and good practices."
The nominees are Eugene G. Rivers III, Lucy Ho, Mark A. Tarmey, Martha Stubbs, Melvina MacDonald, Steve Evans and Tracey Cohen.
Stubbs, owner of Stubbs Music School & Educational Foundation, was humbled to hear of her nomination for the award.
"I'm very honored to know that people in the community see how we do business as ethical," she said. "And I'm looking forward to the honor of meeting the other nominees, being with the Rotarians and being considered for their most prestigious award."
The nominees are selected by graduate students at the Florida State University College of Business, said Maureen Thompson, immediate past president of the Rotary Club of Tallahassee.
The keynote speaker for the mid-day lunch event is Alberto Ibarguen, CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
