Alpha Chi Omega Convention 2016 - #AXOSunshine

It might be chilly and fall-like, but we are remembering back to "fun in the sun" with our sisters in Orlando on this #FlashbackFriday.

We didn’t win any awards in 2016, but we still had fun! (Awards from Convention 2012, #AXOattheArch, and Convention 2010). The Beta Eta chapter won the Community Relations Award, and we were thrilled for them! Xi Omega Xi, the alumnae chapter we share with Beta Eta also won TWO awards (many thanks to their president and Beta Eta chapter advisor, Britain!):  Sisterhood Award and Long Distance Collegiate Support Award!

Plan to join us in Austin, TX for Convention 2018. Jenn said, "Will the hashtag be #KeepAXOWeird?" (love it!)

A photo montage from our treasurer JSBH to share “What’s Convention Like? …” Answer:  AMAZING!

We were so fortunate to enjoy the company of five current collegians at Convention!

#GivingTuesday #AlphaChiOmega Foundation - where does my $$$ go?

Collegians (and alumnae), why should you contribute to the #Foundation?

Giving means more scholarships and grants for collegiate and alumnae members. It means that more campuses across the country will get to hear Andrea Cooper (Tri Delta alumna) speak about the tragic yet inspirational story of her daughter Kristin (Alpha Chi Omega sister). Giving to the Foundation ensures the Alpha Chi Omega experience meets the needs of women both today and tomorrow.
with “Kristin’s Story.”

Giving means more financial support for the enhancement of existing Fraternity programming and the development of new, exciting initiatives such as MyJourney, the ASTP (Alcohol Skills Training Program), #InTune and #AXOGSI (global service initiative).

Thanks University of Oregon, Alpha Kappa chapter for the enthusiasm about #MyJourney! We loved this blog post so much we wanted to share, and show other sisters the Alpha Chi Omega experience in action.

MyJourney is an Alpha Chi Omega-only, four-year program designed to give Freshmen - Seniors real world, life skills training through fun, interesting and research-based, peer-led curriculum. All Vice Presidents of  Membership Programming implement this exciting curriculum in their chapter. Our #alumnae volunteers, Advisors and Specialists convey facilitation and program training to ensure the leaders successful implementation for the sessions. BONUS:  The facilitation workshop and skills look FABULOUS on a resume! Woot!

We encourage alumnae to utilize the list and share with friends. The resource provides a service for alumnae, a fun job for the collegians and a chance to increase and spread the Alpha Chi Omega bond of lifetime sisterhood. Contact Us!

Collegiate Chapter Spotlight - @UFAXO Sisterhood Retreat - #WhyAlphaChi

In honor of UF's fantastic career day in November (shout out VP-ID Cassie Bailey) and volunteering to host #MyJourney facilitator training (shout out Savannah Posgai) for Beta Omicron, Gamma Iota, Gamma Chi, Gamma Pi and Theta Sigma, we are showing some fun photos from Gamma Iota's Fall Sisterhood Retreat.

Sisterhood retreats and activities like KROM, KRONM, KROS fall under the office of vice president of membership programming. Savannah P worked hard with her committee to plan a fun-filled, relaxing and interactive day. The day revolved a "Fall Fair" theme with a special sign, games and a "bake off" (with prizes), yummy snacks and lunch and team building.

We love to see our collegiate chapters engaging in events that strengthen the bond, allow time for relaxation and are safe.

Recapping 2011 Alpha Chi Omega State Day: Florida #TBT

One of our beloved collegians Tracy - a rockstar this one! She served on the executive board at Beta Eta, Rho Lambda and numerous other organizations and honor societies at FSU. She went on to receive her J.D. from UF. During her time at UF she served as the New Member Education advisor. Here she speaks on behalf of Alpha Ch Omega Foundation; she received two scholarships from Foundation during her time in school. Tracy radiates our five membership criteria!

We always make time to purchase stars at the Star Booth to honor our sisters and assist Foundation!

Look at this fine group of Beta Eta alumnae and collegians! We appreciate all they give to Alpha Chi Omega and our lifelong Bond of sisterhood.

State Day in Florida 2013

Remember our previous post where we described State Day?

The Beta Eta collegians and Epsilon Tau Epsilon alumnae enjoyed a fun and productive day at Stetson hosted by our Gamma Chi chapter. The morning was spent learning about our Strengths and how we can focus on those to make ourselves more productive executive board members, chapter members and Alpha Chi Omega citizens. After a yummy lunch, we broke out to learn about utilizing social media, MyJourney, MissRepresentation, financial accountability and more. It was a fun day of meeting new sisters and honing our personal best to become Real. Strong. Women.

Helping a Collegian who helps families with Cancer

We think it is important to support our collegians who are nearby and far away from teh Tallahassee and Thomasville area. This is a worthy cause and one touching and affecting many lives:

To my Alpha Chi sisters,

My name is Bre Vergess and I am the president of Alpha Chi Omega, Pi Chapter at UC Berkeley. I would appreciate it if you could help me share my story with your chapter!

When my father, Dr. Russell Vergess, was diagnosed, I was 12 years old. In the year following the news, I was forced to grow up faster than my friends and I tried to understand how this thing called “Cancer” was making my dad so sick so fast. He was an incredible man and he was my hero, but through his fight and until the day he passed away, his priority was always me. He wanted me to have a normal life and have fun, and more than anything he didn’t want to leave his only daughter behind. The strength of my father and the power of the cause pushed me to fight back in my own way.

Arriving at the University of California, Berkeley almost 3 years ago, I came across an organization called Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem is a free sleep away summer camp for kids ages 6 to 16 with a parent who has or has had cancer. It is simply a week for them to have as much fun as possible, given the support and attention they need.

This year is my third year with Camp Kesem, and my second year as a coordinator, but what has kept me so deeply drawn to this organization can hardly be described to you in a letter. It is an 8 year-old boy with nothing on his mind but the pure joy of reaching the top of the rock climbing wall. It is a group of 10 year-olds who have known each other for 2 days laughing and working together to win the scavenger hunt like they’ve been friends for years. It is sitting face to face with a 13 year-old camper who can’t seem to understand why “this thing” has happened to her, and seeing my young, vulnerable and afraid 13 year-old self staring back at me. I can’t help but think of my dad and what Camp Kesem would have meant to him- knowing the magnitude of a parent’s love for their child and through that, what camp provides not only to the kids, but to the parents.

Camp Kesem is many things: it is adventure, new friends, new experiences. But more than that, it is an inexplicable joy and passion that comes from a common bond that our campers share. It is a place of growth and confidence. It is a source of strength and hope. It comes from a need that changed my life seven years ago, but today, with every camper, their family, and their story, Camp Kesem has drawn my heart closer to its cause.

Camp Kesem is run by college students, and between 2001 and 2010, the organization grew from a single campus hosting 37 campers to a national movement with 37 camps in over 22 states. There are 1.7 million cancer cases a year in the United States that affect individuals and their families, and while the support network is there for adults, the special emotional needs of the children of cancer patients is often overlooked. Camp Kesem is just beginning to address this need.

Camp Kesem, Berkeley, raises $70,000 annually to bring 80 campers and 40 counselors to camp, and we are continuing to grow and expand each year. I would really appreciate any support you can provide - whether it's just reading the Camp Kesem website (www.campkesem.org), forwarding this information on to friends/family, donating, or inquiring about other ways that you can help. All donations are tax-deductible. With your help, we can make this year's Camp Kesem an overwhelming success!

Donate online on my personal fundraising page at: http://tinyurl.com/73bzjd3

In the bond,
Bre Vergess

There are several chapters of Camp Kesem hosted by universities all over the U.S. If you or someone you know has children and has fought or is fighting cancer, or is interested in starting a CK on your/their campus, go towww.campkesem.org for more information.

Beta Eta Founders' Day - 83 years and Still Achieveing the Heights

The Beta Eta collegians invited their local ETE alumnae over for the 83rd Founders' Day Dinner. Beta Eta was founded at the Florida State College for Women March 29, 1929.

We enjoyed viewing the chapter's charter, seeing the gentlemen of Sigma Phi Epsilon who stopped by to bring chocolate-covered strawberries for the occasion, and dining on chicken marsala. Alumnae from old chapters to young chapters attended the event. We represented Pi chapter, Beta Eta chapter, Theta Lambda chapter and Kappa Xi chapter.

Marie the house director always decorates for the seasons and she sent the alumnae home with Gerber daises set in spring buckets - what a treat!
