Alumnae Panhellenic of Tallahassee 2016 - Scholarship Event! #TBT

It's time again for the Annual Alumnae Panhellenic of Tallahassee Scholarship Luncheon!
Once again, our alumnae sisters are involved in the event with Karen Detrick Ellis as the chair.

In preparation of excitement and thanks to Karen (last year's chair), and Malena Allison (APT president last year) we are doing a "Flashback Friday" to last May when the event was held.

Last year and this year showed us a change of venue:  Fun times at the University Center Club at the FSU Stadium. Make sure to search our blog to see photos from the many years we have supported this event.

Can't wait for this year:  http://www.tallahasseeaph.org/events/?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/event/info&reset=1&id=23

Stubbs Educational Foundation & Music School #TBT 2012 and 2013

We are so thankful to our alumnae who continue to support the #finearts and our sisters Joy S. Stubbs (Gamma Iota, UF), Eugenia Battle (Alpha Upsilon, UAL), and our Brother of #Hermes Chuck Stubbs (TKE, FSU).

20 Years of #finearts in music for #Tallahassee

More wonderful news from Joy and Chuck:  "The couple presented the Stubbs’ Educational Foundation with funds to establish the Frank and Virginia Brown endowment in memory of Joy’s grandparents. The Stubbs' Educational Foundation is a non-profit organization in North Florida that provides scholarships to children for music instruction.  Chuck and Joy believe that the study of music enhances education as a whole and that the endowment is a lasting way to commemorate Frank and Virginia."
Here we are in the center, bottom photo! Jenn (Theta Lambda), Britain (Beta Eta),

Turkey Trot - Run, Volunteer, Make a Difference - #AXODVA #DVA #RefugeHouse

Thank you Gulf Winds Track Club for designating Refuge House as one of the beneficiaries of this famous and favorite #Tallahassee tradition!

We are #AXOThankful for all alumnae who run in and volunteer for the event, such as long-time runner from Gamma Iota (UF), Anna Busby. Anna and David Yon spoke about the event last year on local television:  "Walk or Run to Give Thanks with the #TurkeyTrot".

Our treasurer, JSBH (NOT a runner, ha, ha), shared her excitement as well for this year's logo because her friend Cliff Leonard designed it.

Tallahassee Turkey Trot marks 40 years

By David Yon
Despite the crazy world we live in, I remain an optimist.  One of the primary reasons is Thanksgiving Day in Tallahassee.  Thanksgiving is a day that brings people together, perhaps more than any other day of the year. This year marks the 40th year for the race we now call the Tallahassee Turkey Trot.  And while the race has “only” been run on Thanksgiving Day for 24 years (1992), the event’s 40-year history of bringing people together to run (and walk) is a remarkable achievement by the running community that deserves special recognition.

One of the ways the race will do this is by presenting a specially crafted finisher’s medal to each runner crossing the finish line.  The medal recognizes the race’s history by noting the years - “1976 – 2015” and noting “Still Running Together.”

I know right now we live in a world that is dysfunctional more often than not.  Our economic and political systems seem devoted to a “winner take all” philosophy that dehumanizes and divides us. The pace and uncertainty of change too often create such fear that we lose our ability to plan rationally for the future.

Often, we are left trying to protect a status quo, clinging to slogans and clichés, which simply cannot be preserved. Too often this becomes despair that ends with violence.

Yes, that violence sometimes results in mass killings in our schools and theatres, but most often, that violence is turned inward – the Centers for Disease Control estimates that 41,149 people died by suicide in the United States during 2013. Or it becomes violence directed at those we know.  According to the CDC, approximately 27.3 percent of women and 11.5 percent of men in the U.S. have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner.
We all have the ability to impact these numbers in a positive way.  In the introduction to this year’s Turkey Trot Magazine, I observed that there was something special going on in Tallahassee during the years 1975-1977.

“Personally, I was wrapped up in intramural sports as a student at Florida State University. But Tallahassee saw the birth of a running club and nine races during that time period that would become the core of the Gulf Winds Track Club racing schedule.  Not many events last 40 years. Incredibly, all of those races are still run today, including a 10-mile run at Natural Bridge in late November 1976, which continues today as the Tallahassee Turkey Trot.”

Two of those events, Springtime and Turkey Trot, have benefited greatly for the sponsorship support of Capital Health Plan; the company first provided support to Turkey Trot in 2002.

The introduction continued: “41 years later, GWTC has grown in numbers and in its impact on the community. The running community in Tallahassee and surrounding areas has grown enormously too with nine races listed on one weekend this year and approximately 185 events listed on the racing calendar for 2015. These events, staffed almost exclusively with volunteers, have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for hundreds of worthy causes. They have encouraged health and fitness.  They bring people together from all parts of our community.”

And what better day to bring it all together, than Thanksgiving Day – Thanksgiving and running just go together.

While Turkey Trot supports many causes each year, the three largest recipients of help over the last ten or so years have been the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Big Bend, Refuge House and The Shelter.  Each of these groups reaches out to an important part of our community that really needs help.  You can help them by being part of Turkey Trot in a number of ways.  First and foremost, register for the race and join us on Thanksgiving Day.  We like to say we have a Smorgasbord of options.  On Thanksgiving Day no one is too slow or too fast to join us. The races kick off with a 1 mile fun run, the “appetizer,” at 8 a.m. Then at 8:30 the main course is served with the start of the 5K, 10K and 15K races.  It is a block party and community reunion.  Many families have three generations of runners competing.

You can also join us on Nov. 22, for the Turkey Trot Festival at Cascades Park from 1:30 to 5 p.m. It is the perfect place to pick up your race packet which will include your race number, a specially designed long sleeve shirt, a Hoo-Ray and some special treats from sponsors.  We are encouraging participants to bring donations of nonperishable food, toiletries and other such items. We will have a nice arrangement of guests to entertain you including music groups, Low Country Boyle and Hot Tamale. And of course, the Stick Patrol from the Boys and Girls Club. There will be vendors with running and fitness merchandise for sale (including GWTC own line of training gear), health experts to provide advice and screening, fitness experts to give you advice and more. You will come away ready for Thanksgiving.

Forty years of running together. It has not solved all those problems we mention above, but I like to think it has been a positive force.  But no matter, I can’t think of anything else I would rather do on Thanksgiving morning.  Let’s keep it going.

Support DVA without Spending a Dime

From the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:

Save lives and help the environment--donate  your unwanted cell phones and digital electronics to NCADVA.

NCADV partners with Cellular Recycler for the collection of used cell phones and select digital electronics. We receive a portion of the monies that come from the sale of refurbished cell phones to support our programming that helps stop violence in the home.

Cellular Recycler's mission is to create a nationwide cellular recycling program to keep valuable cellular equipment out of landfills. To date, they’ve kept an estimated three million cell phones and over one million accessories out of waste-sites. Also, they have their Responsible Recycling certification which is the highest certification given out by the EPA for E-Waste recyclers so you can trust that the materials they collect are recycled safely, reliably, and through means that minimize waste and errors.
For more information on their programs, e-mailncadv_info@cellularrecycler.com

Accepted Items:**• Any cell phone in any condition and their accessories (most wanted: Iphones and Blackberries, but we will take what you have!)
• Laptops
• Mp3 Players
• Digital Cameras
• Video Game Systems
**chargers, accessories, cords, etc. are accepted too!
All electronics donations are tax deductible. Click here for more information.
Click here to get your free shipping label (3 cell phone/small item minimum required. You may also use this label for shipping laptops, game systems, etc.). Have fewer than three small items or want to ship at your own expense? Mail to: Cellular Recycler, Attn: NCADV, 4840 Sterling Drive, Unit A, Boulder, CO 80301.

Hold a Collection! Order collection supplies like boxes and posters here.

NCADV is recycling items to:• Fund programming that empowers victims of domestic violence, connects victims and survivors to helpful resources, and helps them remain free from abuse
• Support legislation aimed at ending domestic violence
• Give support and resources to organizations across the US working to stop violence in the home

How It Works:
• Roughly 60 percent of the collected items will be refurbished and resold
• The revenue generated from the sale of refurbished items will be used to support NCADV programs that help end violence in the home
• The remaining items are recycled according to the highest environmental standards

Donation Acknowledgements:
All donations are received directly by our recycling partner, Cellular Recycler. Cellular Recycler determines the value of each donation. NCADV then receives monthly reports for each month prior and issues donation acknowledgements to donors with the total value of your donation as soon as we are able. If you need an immediate acknowledgement, you are welcome to download the letter found hereand fill in your own estimate of your donation. If you have further questions pleaseclick here to contact us.

About your item's data:
There is no need to clean or wipe information from the item you wish to donate. All donated electronics are either refurbished and resold or recycled for parts. If refurbished, the item's software is replaced with new software which completely wipes any stored information from the device. If the item is recycled, it is crushed down for recycling. Either way, the information on your device will not be compromised and there is no need to completely wipe your device clean.

The value of your item:
The value of all donated electronics is based on the current wholesale value of that particular item (please note: these values differ from what your items might be going for on Ebay, Craigslist and another similar sites' pricing). NCADV receives approximately 1/3 of each donated item's total value. The total amount received by NCADV for your donation is what we include in the thank you letters sent to you following our receipt of your information from Cellular Recycler, approximately a month to six weeks after your donation is received by them. The amount included in these thank you letters is the amount you may claim on your taxes. To see a list of 2014 values, please click here. For items not included on this list, NCADV receives a minimum of 50¢. Please realize every cent counts in this effort! Electronic donations raised over $63,000 for NCADV in 2014 alone!
*Note: If you wish to receive the Ebay or Craigslist value of your item, you can always sell your item privately and donate that amount to NCADV for which we can then give you full tax credit.

Re-blog from #AXOGSI & our Collegiate @AXO_FSU Sister Chelsea Hogan!

Chelsea served Beta Eta as the vice president of ritual and fraternity appreciation in 2013. In 2014 she is serving as the date function chair. Below is the blog entry she wrote for the Alpha Chi Omega Blog about #AXOGSI:

A Stronger Foundation

GSI Day 4 Chelsea
by Chelsea Hogan
(Beta Eta chapter, Florida State University)

What do you know, yet another amazing day in Jamaica with my Alpha Chi sisters. As night two came to a close all eighteen us of were in the Night Heron’s cabin playing the game signs. I’ve never laughed so hard with girls that I had just met three short days ago. This morning when everyone went to the work site at the Ketto School, the vibe seemed different. Everyone seemed so eager to finish what we had started in hopes of making Ketto an environment where the children would enjoy learning.

Today at our service site, it was our job to repair the foundation of the building which had cracked earlier this year. This was a crucial part in our service trip because if the foundation was not fixed soon the government was going to shut down the school, taking away the great opportunity of education which we in America seem to take for granted. The day felt long as we had a lot to do in a short amount of time. I have never seen anything near as powerful and resourceful as I did today. Unlike in the United States, the great people of Jamaica make their own concrete. Sifting through dirt to separate rocks out of the sand, carrying buckets of concrete and water, and laying bricks in the cement to build the foundation was one of the most physically enduring tasks I have ever been a part of.

The sense of teamwork we all shared was a feeling of accomplishment, and one of love. I never thought that in just three days I would share an inseparable bond with these amazing women from Alpha Chi Omega chapters all over the United States. As the day ended, I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we were all sad to leave and that we couldn’t serve the Ketto School anymore. This school, the teachers, and especially the children have made such a life altering impact on us. I couldn’t be more thankful that I have been given this opportunity to give other people joy, learn about myself, while growing in the process. Thank you Alpha Chi Omega for the amazing opportunity, and thank you to all my Alpha Chi sisters that I cannot wait to continue to bond with over the next four days.

Isabelle Wilkins ('10) served in #AXOGSI as well!

Recapping 2011 Alpha Chi Omega State Day: Florida #TBT

One of our beloved collegians Tracy - a rockstar this one! She served on the executive board at Beta Eta, Rho Lambda and numerous other organizations and honor societies at FSU. She went on to receive her J.D. from UF. During her time at UF she served as the New Member Education advisor. Here she speaks on behalf of Alpha Ch Omega Foundation; she received two scholarships from Foundation during her time in school. Tracy radiates our five membership criteria!

We always make time to purchase stars at the Star Booth to honor our sisters and assist Foundation!

Look at this fine group of Beta Eta alumnae and collegians! We appreciate all they give to Alpha Chi Omega and our lifelong Bond of sisterhood.

Joy Stubbs Doing Good

We like to recognize our sisters who live Alpha Chi Omega values. Today for #TBT we recognize Joy Stubbs (Gamma Iota, UF).

Joy is devoted wife and mother of two sweet children. In her professional life she works as an attorney for the State of Florida where she was recognized for pro-bono work in 2011.

She celebrated five years of cancer free, great living in April this year!

She married into a super cool, musical family (how apropos for an Alpha Chi, right?) And one way we "Support Sisters" is to promote the Stubbs Music Foundation event each year. And we love to buy and eat BlueWater BBQ at FSU home games or use them to cater events - SO YUMMY.

Thanks for living your live with WDA each day Joy!

Froyo for a Cause!: Refuge House

In honor of Sexual Violence Awareness Month in April, we're doing a "throwback" and highlighting the fun we had supporting Refuge House and DVAM in October!

On Saturday, October 20, 2012 Refuge House held a fundraiser at Nuberri to raise awareness about domestic violence and domestic violence awareness month;  honor victims and survivors of domestic violence; and raise funds for the shelter.

Britain and Jenn wanted to document the event (and eat froyo, OF COURSE!)
Check out Britain's blog post on Simply Southern Girl too.

Chapter Advisor Britain is always ready for a PR event with great ideas and fun.
Isn't that AX-DVA button fabulous?

Local Legacy Inspiring Others

So proud to see Amy K's (Beta Eta) daughter in the paper (again). Way to go Hanna; thank you for inspiring us.

Lawton Chiles High School senior awarded grant by ANN INC. and Vital Voices

Every day there are people in our community who are determined to make a difference in the world. The ANNpower Vital Voices Initiative is an innovative partnership between ANN INC., the parent Company of Ann Taylor and LOFT, and organization Vital Voices, that offers leadership skills and mentorship for young women. The two efforts have joined forces to identify the next generation of female leaders who are dedicated to giving back to their communities.
Tallahassee’s 17-year-old Hanna Karimipour, a Lawton Chiles High School senior, is one of only 14 young women from across the country to be awarded an ANNpower grant after completing the ANNpower Vital Voices Leadership Forum, due to her continued interest in making an impact her in community.

Numerous young women from across the country engaged in a competitive national application process last March. A press release from ANN INC. stated that 50 rising high school seniors and juniors were selected as ANNpower Fellows and as participants in the first annual ANNpower Vital Voices Leadership Forum. The forum, which took place this past June, entailed a three-day leadership training program in Washington, D.C., with the curriculum based on the Vital Voices Leadership Model.

The girls were mentored by 12 global women leaders who are part of the Vital Voices Network.
Lawton Chiles High School senior Hanna Karimipour was awarded a national grant by the ANNpower Vital Voices Initiative, an effort that offers leadership skills and mentoring to young women. The award will aid Karimipour in initiating her social change project in the Tallahahassee community, which is focused on empowering women.

“Four months ago, we challenged these young women to take the lead in developing plans that will have an impact in their communities,” President and CEO of Vital Voices Alyse Nelson said in a press release. “From teaching underprivileged families healthy eating habits to launching a girls leadership summit, these ANNpower Project Grants will support the realization of the visionary plans of these dedicated young leaders.”The award will aid Karimipour in initiating her social change project within the Tallahassee community, which is focused on addressing the disparities in female leadership within the state of Florida.
